  1. 1862: Homestead Act Passed by Lincoln to get more Union support 160 acres of FREE LAND to those who promised to farm it for 5 years Homesteaders lived in sod houses because little wood was available on the Great Plains!

  2. 1865 Thousands of immigrants head West to take advantage of the Homestead Act Settle all western land from Mississippi River to Rocky Mountains!

  3. 1865: Exodusters Thousands of African Americans migrate west. Why Exodusters? Escaping the terrible conditions of the South after the Civil War? Black Codes, KKK, etc.

  4. 1866 US buys Alaska from Russia “Seward’s Folly” b/c many thought it was worthless & a waste of money We discover oil in Alaska in the 1960s!!! Woo-Hoo?!?!

  5. 1870: The Railroads Railroad companies hire hunters to kill off the buffalo so they could continue to build tracks. Causes problems for Native Americans!!! 3 million buffalo are killed every year!!!!!

  6. 1874: Barbed Wire!!! Invented by Joseph Gliden!! Sold to farmers on the Great Plains to protect their crops from herds of cattle Responsible for closing the open range!!

  7. 1887: The Dawe’s Act Attempt to Americanize Native Americans Taught their culture was savage Reservations were broken up Forced Native Americans to be farmers Bad tools, soil & services Good land was swindled from Native Americans in bad land deals Children attended American schools Taught English language, dress, culture, etc.

  8. 1889: Indian Territory US Gov’t. opened the Indian Territory to white settlement Jackson established this land in the 1830s Thousands of Homesteaders raced to get land – literally!!! “Great Oklahoma Land Rush” Sooners!!

  9. 1890: Plains Indian Wars After decades of fighting, the “last” battle of the Plains Indian Wars comes to an end at the Battle of Wounded Knee.
