Who was Machiavelli? • Born in Italy in 1469 and died in 1527 • Entered service of Florentine republic as secretary to the Council of Ten • Went on diplomatic missions in France and Germany • Exiled from Italy after Spanish victory in 1512 andMedici family regains power • Wrote books on political topics (eg. The Prince)

  3. Who was Erasmus? • Born in 1466 and died in1536 • A Dutch-born priest of theCatholic Church • Was considered “crowning glory of Christian humanists” • Lived against the backdrop of the growing European religious Reformation

  4. The Situation in Italy • Italy was being invaded by powerful nations such as France and Spain • Corrupt Alexander Borgia wins papal election by bribery • No hereditary monarchy or centralized government • In Florence the Medici family (patrons of art and civil projects) were in decline • Oligarchic families ruled, staying in power by ``eliminating`` business competitors • Italy unable to unify or defend itself

How Did Machiavelli Contribute to the Renaissance? • Impacted political leaders in modern west (helped by the new printing press) • First generations after Machiavelli’s, main influence was in non-Republican governments • In the 16th century, Catholic writers "associated Machiavelli with the Protestants, whereasProtestant authors saw him as Italian and Catholic".

How Did Erasmus Contribute to the Renaissance? • Saw a need for reformation in the Church but maintained deep respect for traditional methods • Prepared new Latin and Greek editions of the New Testament • These raised questions that would be influential in the Protestant Reformation and Catholic Counter-Reformation. • Wrote many influential religiously-based humanist works
