  2. 2012 New York Statewide Trail User Count Project Goals Enhance the body of data statewide Build capabilities for trail groups to conduct their own trail counts. Implement goals of the 2010 NYS Trails Plan

  3. Tools of the Trade: What to bring with you into the field • Suggested Materials: • Sun protection • Water • Snacks • Sunglasses • Chair • Necessary Materials: • Count Forms (Count protocol is on back) • Something to write with and a spare • Clipboard

  4. Choosing a location • Select a popularly used location • Do not count at a trailhead • Set up counts at least fifty • feet from trailhead.

  5. Counting at Multiple Locations • Multiple count locations are encouraged • Only suggested for longer trails • Place count locations several miles apart • Another option is to locate counts in different surroundings (village vs rural)

  6. Count Days • Counts must be conducted between August 5th & 31st consisting of: • One weekend count • Three weekday counts • Tues-Wed-Thur of the same week, or • any of those threedays in consecutive weeks • More counts=better estimates. • Do not conduct extra counts on Mondays or Fridays.

  7. Count Times • Suggested count times: • 5-7 PM on weekdays • 11 AM – 1 PM on weekends • Vary count times to suit your trail • Difference between most hours is negligible • Methodology accounts for off-peak times

  8. Counting • Place a tally mark on the sheet for each person, even if you’ve seen them before • Note how they are using the trail (Walking, Running, Cycling, etc.) • For cyclists, note helmets use • Count each person using a single method (i.e. Tandem Cycles) • Count form has spots for most uses you will encounter

  9. How would you count…

  10. How would you count… 3 Tandem Cyclists 1 Other (Skiblades?) 3 Strollers 3 Walkers/Hikers
