  1. Numeral System: Indian And International – Face Value and Place Value takshilalearning.com/numeral-system-indian-and-international-face-value-and-place-value/ August 2, 2022 International and Indian system of numeration – Face Value and Place Value Indian Numeral System / Indian system of numeration Let us use the number 997 as an example. It is worth noting that the numeral 9 appears twice in this number. They each have different worth. We distinguish them by mentioning their place value, defined as a digit’s numerical value based on its position in a number. As a result, the leftmost 9 has a place value of Hundreds, while the other 9 in the middle has a place value of Tens. Now, let us discuss the Indian Numeral System in detail. Ones, Tens, Hundreds, Thousands, Ten Thousand, Lakhs, Ten Lakhs, Crores, and so on are the place values of digits. In the number 20,63,15,768: The place value of each digit will be 8: Ones 6: Tens 7: Hundreds 5: Thousands 1: Ten Thousand 3: Lakhs 6: Ten Lakhs 0: Crores 2: Ten Crores 1/7

  2. Following is the relationship between them: 10 Tens = 1 Hundred 100 Tens = 10 Hundreds = 1 Thousand 1000 Hundreds = 100 Thousands = 1 Lakh 10,000 Thousands = 100 Lakhs = 1 Crore Indian Numeral System Zeros in 1 Crore We know that 1 Crore = 100 Lakhs And 1 Lakh = 1,00,000 Since there are five zeros in lakhs, we can write 1 Crore as: 1 Crore = 100 x 1,00,000 1 Crore = 1,00,00,000 Therefore, the number of zeros in 1 Crore is seven. International Numeral System / International system of numeration In the international numeral system, digit place values get assigned to Ones, Tens, Hundreds, Thousands, Ten Thousand, Hundred Thousands, Millions, Ten Million, and so on. In the number 85,346,297, the place values of each digit are: 7: Ones 9: Tens 2: Hundreds 5: Thousands 4: Ten Thousand 3: Hundred Thousand 5: Millions 8: Ten Million 2/7

  3. International Numeral System Following is the relationship between them: 10 Tens = 1 Hundred 100 Tens = 10 Hundreds = 1 Thousand 1000 Thousand = 1 Million 1000 Millions = 1 Billion Zeros in a Million In a million, there are six zeros. Such that 1 Million = 1,000,000 We can also write 1 Million = 1000 thousand. We also know that 1 Thousand = 1000 Since thousand also has three zeros, Thus, 1 Million = 1000 x 1000 1 Million = 1,000,000 Therefore, the number of zeros in one million is six. Indian and International Numeral System: Comparison Comparing the two numeral systems We observe that: 1 Lakh = 100 Thousand 10 Lakhs = 1 Million 1 Crore = 10 Millions 10 Crores = 100 Millions Placement of Comma Commas are used in large quantities to make them easier to read and write. The commas are positioned differently in Indian and foreign systems. 3/7

  4. According to the Indian numeral system, the first comma gets inserted after the hundreds position and after every two digits. For example, 4,23,15,67,890 According to the international numeral system, the first comma gets inserted after the hundreds position and every three digits after that. For example, 4,231,567,890 Numeral System: Indian And International – Face Value and Place Value Worksheet 4/7

  5. FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions) 1. Mention the difference between the place value and face value. Place Value: The position itself determines the place value of a digit. Face Value: A digit’s face value is the digit itself. For example, take a number, i.e., 457. The place value of 5 is tens which is 50 and the face value of 5 is 5. 5/7

  6. Distinguish the Indian numeral system frthe om International numeral system? The following table highlights the differences between the Indian numeral system and the International numeral system. Indian Numeral System International Numeral System There are four periods in which Nine places are grouped, i.e. Ones, Thousands, Lakhs, as well as Crores. Three are three periods in which Nine places are grouped: Ones, Thousands, and Millions, and further into billions and so on. Place Values: Ten Crores, Crores, Ten Lakhs, Lakhs, Ten Thousand, Thousands, Hundreds, Tens, and Ones. Place Values: Hundred Million, Ten Million, Million, Hundred Thousand, Ten Thousand, Thousands, Hundreds, Tens, and Ones. Lakhs and Crores are Indian units according to the Indian Numeral System. Millions and Billions are international units according to the International Numeral System. 2. What is the Indian Numeral System? Numerical symbols, or numerals, represent numbers in the Indian numeral system. This system may be distinguished from other numeric systems by the terminology used for unique place values. When the Indian number system is used, we count in Ones (1s), Tens (10s), Hundreds (100s), Thousands (1000s), Ten Thousand (10,000s), Lakhs (1,00,000s), Ten Lakhs (10,00,000s), and Crores (1,00,00,000s). The table below shows the various periods and locations based on the number of digits in a number. 3. What is the use of Separators ? Separators (commas) are used after every period in the Indian numeral system when expressing a number in its standard numeric form. For example, In the standard Indian numeral system, 589746382 is best expressed as 58,97,46,382 with separators after each period. 4. What is the International Number System? The international number system (INU) is a system for expressing numbers that divides them into groups or periods. These groupings or periods aid us in correctly interpreting huge numbers. Comparable groups or periods are used in the international numbering system, but the commas are placed differently. Ones, Thousands, Millions, and furthermore are the periods of the international number system. Each of these periods further gets subdivided into categories. 6/7

  7. To understand the period system in the international number system, look at the table below. 5. What are the rules of the International Number System? The separators (commas) placement is critical in the international number system. The place values and periods of any number get used to creating these separators. The basic rule to follow in the international numeral system is as follows: There is no plural form for the periods. 936,852, for instance, is always written as 936,852. In thousand or hundred, we do not add an’s’. Before tens and ones, the word ‘and’ is never used. The number 6767, for example, is usually written as six thousand seven hundred sixty-seven. Six thousand and seven hundred sixty-seven is not how we interpret it. When writing a number in expanded form, we do not use commas. For instance, 2323 is always written as two thousand three hundred twenty-three. We do not write it as two thousand, three hundred, twenty-three.
