  1. SSO collaborationsin IEA/IAEA JJ Daejon 14 May 2007

  2. Context • IEA FPCC meetings in 2006 & 2007 • Considered collaborative activities after ITER decision • Recognized the increasing importance of SSO • Formed ad-hoc group on possible collaborative IEA SSO activities • Group chaired by J. Jacquinot & O. Motojima • Findings of the group reported to FPCC in Feb 2007 meeting • Endorsed the report and asked to follow-up JJ Daejon 14 May 2007

  3. SSO report (1) • Draws attention to importance of SSO research • Essential for ITER & DEMO • Fortunately it’s the main focus of new equipments: • KSTAR, EAST, W7-X, SST1, JT-60-SA and upgrades of LHD & Tore Supra etc… • Analyses 3domaines: • Physics • Physics engineering • Technology • More collaborative activities are indeed needed Such as the Daejeon TM on SSO!! JJ Daejon 14 May 2007

  4. SSO report (2) • Physics: • Well coordinated in ITPA (see A. Sips) and several IA activities (Poloidal div, Large Toks, Textor) • Physics engineering (start-up, heating, control, regime accessibility…) • Partly coordinated at present. Missing new aspects of superconducting devices (Bmax, AC losses avoidance etc) • Technology • Only coordinated via occasional IAEA TM’s; need for more specific exchanges: staff, R&D programmes, operating experience  Urgency in present context JJ Daejon 14 May 2007

  5. 3 options examined • Nothing • Not accepted by IEA !! • New IA on SSO in toroïdal devices • Controversial for some IEA members • Heavy admin, too many IA, no will to change … • ‘Do as if new IA’ (initially) • Simple agreement between labs focused on SSO • Prepare every year an SSO collaborative work programme annex for submission to existing IA’s and ITPA • Monitor and implement the annex • Advantage: visibility and legal framework for collaboration (eur mobility etc.) • IEA asked ad-hoc group to try the “Do as if” and prepare a draft annex to existing IA’s JJ Daejon 14 May 2007

  6. Draft annex • Participating labs (preliminary agreement at Chengdu conf) • Correspondent in each lab, one lab acts as secretariat • Steering committee meeting once a year • Reporting every year to IEA • Take part in ITPA & IA executive committees • Work programme for 2007-2008 • Proposed staff exchange (bilateral) • Proposed joint experiments, tests, R&D • Specialised workshops • Lending equipment • Make a start today, list of topics, exchanges already prepared • Consolidate & validate in each lab • Endorsement by IEA (end 2007) JJ Daejon 14 May 2007
