  3. CUT WORDS Cut out every word that can be spared. Get rid of “due to the fact that” and “in order to” and all other wordy constructions that don’t say anything.

  4. REDUCE CLAUSES Almost all clauses can be reduced in some way – use appositives or phrases

  5. INTENSIFY VERBS Circle verbs and intensify the weak ones. Eliminate is, was, were and other forms of ‘to be’

  6. SHARPEN DICTION Find the very BEST words For the audience and purpose.

  7. PACK PHRASES Move them behind the nouns. Pack this sentence: “A proposal presented by Derek Bok, the president of Harvard, was defeated.”

  8. PACK PHRASES 2 Pack it to “Harvard president Derek Bok’s proposal failed.”
