  2. Admin. Things • Wiki server is ready • https://www-s.cs.uiuc.edu/wiki/cs598yyz/ • Survey due on Oct 3rd • Project position paper due on Oct 10th • Team weekly meetings • Team project facility • VMware • Contact your TA • Today • Three presentations • Discussions CS598YYZ-Fall 2005

  3. Discussion: Mis-Configuration • Will it be useful to incorporate metadata to each registry entry in order to make it more understandable to users? (Thadpong) • Is the configuration problem more severe or less severe on Linux? (Shan) • Why not have separate configuration spaces? (Joe) CS598YYZ-Fall 2005

  4. Discussion: Mis-Configuration • These paper are very high-level, handwavy. Can you make them more concrete? • 1st group: mis-configuration fault injection • 2nd group: Mis-configuration detection • 3rd group: mis-configuration prevention • 4th group: mis-configuration recovery CS598YYZ-Fall 2005

  5. Discussion: Mis-Configuration • How would the STRIDER work in a distributed configuration environment where is it harder to collect the same type of global configuration data provided by the Windows Registry (Radu) • Is it possible to create a large web-based genomic database in order to reduce space overhead due to redundant data across many machines? (Thadpong) • Can we improve this work by using gray-box (the combination of white-box and black-box) approach (Thadpong) CS598YYZ-Fall 2005

  6. Discussion: Operator Errors • How to detect global mis-configurations? • Isn't it validation too expensive to carry out and time-consuming? (Chao, Lin) • Can they think of a better way to prevent misconfiguration problems from occurring? How would it be different than the validation slice? (James) • What are the disadvantages of the proposed mechanism compared to the offline testing systems? (Spiros) CS598YYZ-Fall 2005
