  2. Revision: The Exposure Triangle Understanding flash light is the next step on from understanding ambient light. Correctly exposed ambient light relies on three things: • Shutter speed • Aperture • ISO • Shutter speed affects exposure and motion blur • Aperture affects exposure and depth-of-field • ISO setting affects exposure and digital noise

  3. Get to know your flash! • Set your camera to Manual or Shutter-Priority and turn on your flash… • What’s the fastest shutter speed you can choose? • Take some pictures now with the correct exposure. Set your ISO, aperture and shutter speed as normal and turn on your flash (if using a flash gun, set to ETTL ‘Exposure Through The Lens’). • Next, in your menu find the flash exposure compensation. Experiment by setting this to +1, +2 and then -1, -2, take some photo’s, what’s the difference in your photo? • If you have the option to set your flash (or external flash gun) to fast sync mode, do this now and find out what is your fastest shutter speed?

  4. Tips for using flash: • Your flash will only cover a certain amount of distance, make sure you're close enough to your subject (usually within few meters when using inbuilt flash). • To eliminate red-eye, use the settings in your camera or post production software like Photoshop. • Diffuse nasty shadows behind the subject by putting distance between subject and background and by using darker backgrounds when possible.

  5. Diffusing your flash: • Direct flash light can be harsh. One way of softening the light without manually reducing the power of your flash output is by diffusing your flash. • The following households objects can be used to diffuse your flash: • Masking tape over the flash • Tissue over flash and secured with rubber band • Make your own soft box with a white paper cup and attach to flash REMEMBER - As a general rule, use white materials to diffuse flash so you don’t give your image a colour cast

  7. Bounce Flash: • You can also diffuse your flash light by bouncing it off something else. This is often known as bounce flash. This is mostly an option when using a flash gun because it can be manually moved unlike inbuilt flash. • Household items that can be used effectively are: • White paper stuck to the flash • White wall or ceiling Or a professional reflector can be bought for between £5-£30...but we will look at how to make home-made reflectors today!

  9. Reflectors: White – reflects soft, white light Silver – reflects strong, cool light (can have blue tone) Gold – reflects strong, warm light (can have yellow tones) Black – absorbs light *See our WikiSpace for more info on reflectors if you’re interested*

Flash Photography Task: • Experiment capturing still life’s or portraits around the college using flash. • Experiment in your camera’s menu with flash compensation exposure to change the output of your flash. • Experiment with home-made diffusers, bouncing your flash and the reflector to capture an aesthetically pleasing flash portrait. * * * * * * * • Use a fast shutter speeds to capture a sharp image of a moving subject. (use fast sync mode if you have it) • Use slow shutter speeds to capture movement of a moving subject.
