  5. Shared Values • Social Service agencies are interested in educational outcomes for children. Positive educational outcomes lead to a more successful life, and “breaking the cycle…”. However, they are not in charge of providing an education for these children. • Schoolsare interested in the health and well being of children because children who live with good health and well being do better academically and are more successful in life, “breaking the cycle…..” However, they are not in charge of services that bolster health and well being • Interventions should be individualized and tailored. Each child/family is unique and dealing with a difference set of circumstances.

  6. Service Integration • Our two systems have many kids in common • There are often several case managers and/or counselors working with each student • Some students/families need services but remain unidentified • Holistic service delivery increased efficiency and effectiveness • We have many pieces that are working, if we put them together they will be stronger

  7. Service Integration – cont. • DSHS is working to coordinate supports and service for multi-system involved families in low performing schools. • Children and families in DSHS-care often live in communities that have low performing schools. • The children who have the worst academic achievement are often those we serve- with mental illness, chemical dependency, housing instability, adverse childhood experiences, criminal justice and child welfare involvement in their families. • We are partnering with local school districts to change the way we plan and deliver services in these low performing schools to improve the outcomes for our clients and ultimately all students in these schools.

  8. Yakima Partnership • In Yakima we are partnering with the Yakima School District to deliver services inside the school system to improve the educational and life outcomes for multisystem-involved families. • The focus has been on several low income schools (Adams, Barge-Lincoln, Garfield, McClure, Ridgeview, Roosevelt, Robertson, Franklin, Washington MS, On-line HS, Davis HS). With several other schools wanting to participate • Several meetings occurred with local DSHS staff, school district representatives, and school principals and counselors. As a result of those meetings, principals in the participating schools welcomed the local DSHS team into their student staffing meetings. • Local DSHS representatives meet at each school with existing school teams consisting of principals, counselors, psychologists and social workers. • The DSHS team regularly attends scheduled school care team meetings once a month to staff multisystem-involved families and children.
