  1. Geography Club National Council for Geographic Education

  2. Overview • Geography Clubs are aimed at upper elementary grades (3 – 5 or higher). May be adapted to middle school grades. • Activities will be web-based on the NCGE website.

  3. Setting Up Your Club • Approval from administrator • When and how often to meet – 1 or 2 times a month is suggested • After school transportation • Funding – school budget, PTA, local civic clubs, education foundations • Where the club will meet

  4. Suggested Materials • A wall map of the world • Atlases, almanacs, and other reference books are suggested • Internet access • colored pencils and/or markers, construction paper and similar supplies

  5. Monthly Activities Each month an activity for Geography Clubs will be posted on the NCGE website. The activities will be based on the National Geography Standards and will be designed to engage students with high-interest, hands-on activities.

  6. Monthly Activities • Each month’s activities will include • a warm-up activity • a featured lesson • trivia questions • The materials needed for the activities and any websites will be included. Student worksheets will be ready to print. • (.PDF format)

Featured Activities • Tear-It Map Activity • Groups create a map of the world by tearing construction paper • Visual Geography Terms • A to Z geographic terms illustrated with pictures • Going to Extremes • The highest, lowest, tallest, longest, deepest, largest, smallest, hottest, coldest, wettest, driest places on Earth and the U.S.
