  1. Front cover analysis of KERRANG! And Metal Hammer Analysis using McMahon and Quinn’s print analysis code.

  2. KERRANG! • Written analysis • KERRANG! uses a bold plain font throughout the front cover with the only exception being the magazine name. This is in an almost plain font which a cracked glass effect on top of it and a few scatters throughout the words. This looks more grunge which is an ideology associated with the readers of KERRANG! • The captions follow a basic layout of the artist name in a larger font followed a subheading describing what is happening with the band and the article with possibly a pull out quote accompanying the two. • The lexical choices used reflect words associated with the rock and metal scene. The choice of words such as ‘Horror’, ‘Uproar’, ‘mayhem’ and ‘storm’ follow an anarchist theme. This links the supposed rebelliousness of the magazines readers. • They also use buzzwords such as ‘exclusive’ and ‘awesome’ to attract the readers attention and try to get them to purchase the magazine.

  3. KERRANG! • Technical analysis • KERRANG! use mid-shots in practically all of their magazine front covers. This means the reader can see the faces of the artists without the artists taking up all of the front cover and close enough so the reader doesn’t have to strain to see the images. • The lighting in the main images cast a shadow over the and members creating a more mysterious side to the image. This can link to the anarchistic and rebellious side of the music genre and can be considered as the band having dark secrets which they don’t wish to reveal. • The juxtaposition between the bands and the KERRANG! Logo creates the meaning that the band is what is selling the magazine rather than the name showing the fame and popularity of the band and increasing reader attraction.

  4. KERRANG! • Symbolic analysis • The choice of models in both magazines are young Caucasian males. This represents the majority of artists in this genre and follows a general code of front cover male models in magazines. • The band members usually have mid/long length hair cut to have side sweeping fringes. The hair is usually a dark colour. • The band members commonly have tattoos which is generally seen then this music scene. • There are 3 colours dominantly present on most front covers. These are black, white and red. Black is a predominant colour in this scene, it reinforces the dark anarchistic side of the magazine. White and red both compliment the black and each other.

  5. METAL HAMMER • Written analysis • Metal hammer uses a basic sharp edged font for its logo at the top of its page. However, for the bands they use the bands logos to write the name of the band. • The caption follow a convention of sets of three. First we have the band name in the middle, followed by the article title and a quote from the band either above or below the band name. • Metal Hammer uses lexical choices to present the magazine. It uses the words ‘destroyers’, ‘evil’ and ‘unholy’. These words can be seen as dark and negative and manic.

  6. METAL HAMMER • Technical analysis • Metal Hammer generally uses mid to long shots. This gives the band more of an ability to pose in specific ways, of which they take advantage of by dressing up and propping up for the occasion. • Again, as with KERRANG!, this magazines lighting casts a shadow across the band members faces creating a sense of darkness and forbidden evil within the members themselves. • Again, the juxtaposition within this magazine between the band and the magazine name shows the band is what is being used to advertise and sell the magazine rather than the name.

  7. METAL HAMMER • Symbolic analysis • The choice of males in these magazines are both younger Caucasian males. This seems to be a common theme amongst both magazines and in my magazine I will aim to overcome this. • In this magazine the males either have longer hair or short hair. These hairstyles are more commonly seen in the Metal genre rather than the side fringe mid/long hair we see in the rock magazine KERRANG! • The band members are covered in full sleeve tattoos. This is commonly seen in the metal genre and readers will relate to these. • There are again three majorly dominant colours in this magazine. They are red, black and white; which is the same as in KERRANG! I shall have to consider this in the production of my magazine.
