  1. Mrs. Mittiga’s 3rd Grade Class Welcome Families!

All About Mrs. M. • My Background • I grew up in Hasbrouck Heights, NJ. • I attended Muhlenberg College. • I will complete my masters in Literacy at Bank Street College of Education in December. • I’m certified to teach K-6 in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and soon to be New York. • I’m entering my 7thyear teaching. • I have been in many different classrooms and experienced grades K-6, but 3rd is my favorite.

  3. Goals for 3rd Grade • To give you the academic tools you need to progress to 4th grade. • To provide a supportive learning environment. • To have fun while we learn. • To make new friends and discover new interests.

  4. Class Content • We will cover all the subjects and topics that our curriculum committee believes are important for you to learn during 3rd grade. • Curriculum objectives are based upon state standards and guidelines set forth by the National Association of Independent Schools.

  5. Language Arts • reading comprehension • reading with fluency and expression • vocabulary • word study: grammar and spelling • Writer’s Workshop • oral speaking and presentation

Nutrition Policy • See page 11 in the Handbook • It is the goal of St. Philip’s Academy to teach students healthy eating habits. • With this goal in mind, the following is a list of acceptable snacks: • Crackers • Pretzels • Fruit and/or Vegetables • Granola bars • Yogurt/Pudding • Trail mix • Cereal • Popcorn • Rice cakes • Applesauce • 100 calorie packs • String cheese • Mini-muffins • Raisins

  15. Daily Routine • Late Bell – 8:20am • Contract work • Morning Meeting • English Language Arts – ELA • Guided Reading • Writer’s Workshop • Word Study • Penmanship • Lunch/Recess – 11:35am-12:20pm • DEAR Time • Math • Social Studies & Science • Class Conference • Dismissal – 3:30pm

  16. Homework • Check assignment pad, folders, and reading log each day • Call or send in a note in case of absences with homework request • Homework is checked daily! • Contracts must be signed and returned upon return from the weekend.

  17. In School Supplies • 3 ring binder (Trapper Keeper style) • 2 boxes of tissues • Red pen (correction) • Pencils (no pens!) • Erasers • Pair of unused socks • Girls: • 1 box sandwich size Ziploc bag • 2 rolls of paper towel • Boys: • 1 box gallon size Ziploc bags • 2 bottles of hand soap
