  2. What is your story? • Jeannette Walls grew up in unusual circumstances; however she rarely complains. Instead she grew from the hardships she encountered. She is quoted as saying “you shape the truths by which stories you tell and how you tell them.” • Select ONE story you would like to tell about your life. Remember Walls’ advice to find your own voice and tell the truth as you want your reader to understand it.

  3. Tips to keep in mind 1. The writer should turn her fierce critical eye on herself. 2. Personal writing should seem honest. 3. Personal writing should entertain the reader. The word “entertain” can pertain to something scary, funny, shocking, sad, or any other universally shared emotion. 4.The standards of craft in personal writing should not be lower than in fiction. There is no reason why something true should be sloppily or boringly written.
