  4. The guidance in the CLEAPSS Handbook reads: The DES has advised against the taking of cells from the inside of cheeks. This advice has been challenged by the Institute of Biology which has suggested that the removal of cheek cells using a cotton bud is safe. LEA’s with the advice of the local Community Health Physician, need to decide whether the taking of cheek cells should be allowed in their schools. The CLEAPSS Handbook then outlines the following procedure: A cotton bud from a newly opened pack is moved over the inside of a cheek on one side of the mouth and along the outer lower side of the gum. After the bud has been smeared over a small area of the slide, it is discarded into a suitable disinfectant such as hypochlorite. The smear is stained with 1% methylene blue before a cover slip is placed on it. After examination, the slide should be placed in disinfectant.   6. Activity The technique will now be demonstrated (handout used with students is attached)

  7. The procedure demonstrated was as in the guidance. The procedure would only be done with well-behaved and responsible groups. Students usually work individually. Ideally the number of students should be no more than 20. A clear introduction to the technique including a demonstration by the teacher is required. The teacher needs to monitor carefully the pacing of the used cotton buds immediately in the disinfectant; it is a good idea to patrol the room with beaker of disinfectant in hand.
