  2. Sir William Crookes • Sir William Crooke constructed the cathode ray • He was also the first person to discover electrons

  3. Life • Born in London England June 17th 1832- died in England April 14th 1919 • He had many kids • He even went to Oxford and obtained Chemical post at Chester

  4. Meteorologist • In 1854 he was a Superintendent of the Meteorological Department of Radcliffe Astronomical Observatory in the College of Oxford

  5. Thallium • Atomic Number 81 • Melting point 5770K • Boiling point 17460K • At room temperature it is solid

  6. Radiometer • Transferred light into motion pictures • In return created a basis for the television

  7. Spiritualism • In 1860 he became interested in spiritualism which affected the way he looked at science • Crooke looked into spiritualism to try to prove psychic powers real • He ended up loosing respect for being a scientist

  8. Presidency • In 1890 he was elected to become president of the electrical engineers • In 1897 he was elected President of the Society for Psychical Research • He became the Honorary Secretary in 1900 -1912.

  9. His Wife • Ellen Humphrey • Met Crookes at age 19 • Married 40 years

  10. Radioactivity • Crookes was interested in the field of radioactivity. • After researching uranium for several years he invented an instrument made to detect alpha-rays called a spinthariscope, which means "spark-viewer."
