Turgid . Adj.- purposely inflated in an effort to impress; overblown, pompous, or bombastic. . Etymology. 1620 , from L . turgidus "swollen, inflated," from  turgere  "to swell," of unknown origin. Fig. use in reference to prose is from 1725.
