  1. APIC-VIRGINIA STRATEGIC PLAN2009 - 2012 VISION: It is the vision of APIC-VA to be the leader, key resource and advocate in the field of infection prevention and control and applied epidemiology for all health settings.

  2. MISSION • The Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology, Inc., Virginia Chapter (APIC-VA) is a multi-disciplinary voluntary organization. Our purpose is to influence, support and improve the quality of health care through the practice and management of infection prevention and control and the application of epidemiology in all health settings. APIC-VA is committed to improve patient care, prevent adverse outcomes and to minimize occupational hazards associated with the delivery of health care.

STRATEGIC PRIORITIES • GOAL 1APIC-VA will emphasize prevention and promote zero tolerance for healthcare-associated infections and other adverse events. • GOAL 2 APIC-VA will promote, direct and support research and education for the continued advancement of the practice of infection prevention and control. • GOAL 3 APIC-VA will play a leadership role in emergency preparedness related to infection prevention and control, including emerging infectious disease, bioterrorism, natural disasters and other issues. • GOAL 4 APIC-VA will serve as a leader in the practice of infection prevention and control and the application of epidemiology • GOAL 5 APIC-VA will ensure that our mission is supported by our resources and activities.

STRATEGIC PLAN GOAL 1 APIC-VA will emphasize prevention and promote zero tolerance for healthcare associated infections and other adverse events. • Objectives • Promote the implementation of interventions and strategies to reduce the occurrence of healthcare-associated infections. • Support and promote public health initiatives. • Monitor the mandatory reporting process and participate in evaluating and improving the process.

GOAL 2APIC-VA will promote, direct and support research and education for the continued advancement of the practice of infection prevention and control. • Objectives • Present information regarding infection prevention and control issues to the media. • Provide quality educational offerings and material for infection prevention and control professionals (ICP’s). • Offer programs on infection prevention and control issues to groups outside the organization to other health care providers and the public. • Monitor and influence the development or revision of guidelines and standards related to the practice of infection prevention and control. • Communicate with other organizations as appropriate regarding issues, needs and educational offerings. • Contribute financially to the APIC Research Foundation

GOAL 3 APIC-VA will play a leadership role in emergency preparedness related to infection prevention and control, including emerging and reemerging infectious diseases, bioterrorism, natural disasters and other issues. • Identify critical partnerships and dependencies necessary for prompt and effective disaster response by ICP’s. • Strengthen the partnership between public health epidemiologists and ICP’s.

Goal 4 APIC-VA will serve as a leader in the practice of infection prevention and control and the application of epidemiology. • Identify pertinent regulatory an legislative issues through information provided by National Office, literature and medical reports. • Monitor General Assembly activity for bills which impact our practice. • Communicate urgent issues vial email to the membership so that timely responses can be generated to legislators. • Provide resources for timely response to regulatory and legislative issues. • Maintain visibility of APIC-VA with the legislature and communicate with legislators as appropriate. • Promote certification.

GOAL 5 APIC-VA will ensure that our mission is supported by our resources and activities • Conduct a membership needs assessment annually. • Present information regarding current issues in infection prevention and control through email and on the web site. • Design educational programs to meet the needs of the membership. • Maintain an up to date loan library • Provide education scholarships to National and state educational conferences. • Provide resources for members pursuing certification/recertification such as study guides, review courses and possible scholarship assistance. • Recognize members who have attained certification or recertification. • Reward members how develop outstanding educational programs.
