  1. Causes: Increase in Factories • Industrial Revolution • Result of major changes in agriculture, manufacturing, mining, transportation and technology • Steam power capabilities - increased production

  2. Cause: increase in Factories War of 1812 • Manufacturing Capability increased –the British blockade of the American coast created a shortage of cotton cloth. Previously American cotton was shipped to Britain where it was turned into cloth, then sent back to America, leading to the creation of a cotton Manufacturing industry, numerous manufacturing establishments were founded (particularly in the Northern region). This left the United States industrially independent of Europe)

  3. Causes: Increase in Urbanization • Industrialization produced substantial growth in cities. 35 % of Americans lived in urban areas, mostly in the northern half of the United States. • The increased number of jobs, along with technological innovations in transportation and housing construction, encouraged migration to cities.

  4. Urbanization leads to Immigration and conflict • Urbanization is the process of moving to cities to find jobs. There were more jobs located in the cities therefore it led to an increase of large cities such as New York. • There are differences in Social Class, Religion, and Political beliefs

  5. Immigration • There was discrimination towards immigrants (non speaking English), women, and children • There was an anti immigrant sentiment because immigrants were willing to work for lower wages • It lead to overcrowding in apartment buildings. • There was an increase in crime, disease and fires

  6. Immigration The Know Nothing Party- • They campaigned against immigration, esp. Irish and Germans • This party was a combination of Ex-Democrats, Whigs and Nativists (people born in the U.S) • When people were asked about their organization they would reply “ I KNOW NOTHING”
