  34. HOMAGO and HiTech Labs HOMAGO: Hanging Out. Messing Around. Geeking Out. It is an exploratory learning approach that has been used successfully to engage youth. The Howard County Library System’s HiTech Digital Media Lab applies innovative teaching methods based on HOMAGO, demonstrating that teens learn most effectively through hands-on projects and peer-to-peer communications.

  36. HOMAGO Theory Hanging Out. Messing Around. Geeking Out. HOMAGO is “a working hypothesis that those immersed in new digital tools and networks are engaged in an unprecedented exploration of language, games, social interaction, problem solving, and self-directed activity that leads to diverse forms of learning.” —Hanging Out, Messing Around and Geeking Out. The experiential learning theory is based on research led by Professor Mizuko Ito, Associate Researcher at the Humanities Research Institute at the University of California, Irvine. Ito and colleagues derived this theory by observing the relationship between youth and digital media, and noting the three levels of participation.
