  1. Faculty of Mathematics, University of Belgrade, Serbia GRE:Analysis of an Argument Boris Radovanovićmi06046@alas.matf.bg.ac.rs Marko Stojićevićmi06064@alas.matf.bg.ac.rs

  2. Table of content • Defining a problem • Defining arguments • Argument elaboration • Conclusion and questions 2/8

  3. Defining a problem • “Last month, CapitalBank’s employee absenteeism and turnover rates both reached all-time highs. In order to reverse these trends, Capital should adopt a companywide "casual Friday" policy, under which all employees would be permitted, and even encouraged, to dress casually for work every Friday. … After all, most companies in the software industry allow their workers to dress casually for work anytime they want.” 3/8

  4. Defining arguments • Capital’s employee would be more productive and satisfied if company would adopt “casual Friday” • Employees are leaving the company because of the business dress code • Bad statistics of employees in Capital Bank 4/8

  5. Argument elaboration (1) • Capital’s employee would be more productive and satisfied if company would adopt “casual Friday” • Argument is based on equalization of the two different industries • Do economists really want to go to work wearing casual clothes? 5/8

  6. Argument elaboration (2) • Employees are leaving the company because of the business dress code • Can this be the only reason you decide to leave work? 6/8

  7. Argument elaboration (3) • Bad statistics of employees in Capital Bank • It is not reliable to make a conclusion after one month’s statistics • There is no enough data 7/8

  8. Conclusion and questions • Featured article hasn’t elaborated why it is said that employee’s preferences and dress codes in the software industry are similar enough to Capital’s employees, nor that Capital’s current dress code is the real cause of the absenteeism in the first place. 8/8
