  2. Goal for the Day Review: Be able to list the major parts of plants and describe their functions. Be able to draw the phylogenetic tree of plants.

  5. Phylogenetic Tree of Plants • Shows the Evolutionary relationship between major plant groups. • That is it shows the _________ over • _______ between the major plant groups.

  6. Phylogenetic Tree of Plants TIME Non-vascular plants (they don’t have vascular tissue) TRUE ROOTS STEMS LEAVES Contain Vascular Tissue, so which groups of plants lack these?

Phylogenetic Tree of Plants • Each Green Dash on the tree indicates that every plant group above that line has that characteristic, and every plant group below that line lacks that characteristic. • For example as you can see Liverworts, Hornworts, & Mosses all lack vascular tissue: They are non-vascular plants. However, Ferns, Gymnosperms & Angiosperms all have vascular tissue, and are therefore vascular plants.

  10. Leaves Functions… Photosynthesis – using light to make food Stomata - Holes in the underside of leaves, which regulate the water loss in transpiration

  11. Stems Functions… Some photosynthesis Support Transport of nutrients through the two Vascular Tissues 1. Phloem – carries food from the leaves to the roots (moves down) 2. Xylem – carries water from the roots to the leaves (moves up)

  12. What makes a fruit? • Look at the picture again, and try to decide what characteristics make a fruit.

  14. Scientific Method of Fruits • Using what we learned today about plants write out the steps of the scientific method to answer the question: Is it a fruit? • For the test look up online to see if your hypothesis is correct. • Ex. IF it comes from a flower, THEN it is a fruit.

  15. Check on Germinating Seeds • Make Observations & RECORD them in your observation table. • Is it dry? • Did it change color? • Does it smell? • Make any measurements that seem applicable (i.e. size of crack in the seed)
