Research Contribution • Information Literacy is not part of Library and Information Science but part of Education • Trans-disciplinary dialogue now needed • Basil Bernstein’s Pedagogic Device provides a lens for this dialogue
Methods • 5 critical groups recruited • Themes further elaborated by these groups • Instrumental Case Study methodology • Used Pedagogic Device conceptual framework
Basil Bernstein 1924-2000 Based in London Institute of Education, University of London Sociolinguistic theory of languages AND Pedagogic Device www.historylearningsite.co.uk
Pedagogic Device • The pedagogic device refers to the processes by which knowledge relocates, refocuses and relates other discourses to constitute its own order. • It is through this triad model that the thematic findings of my research are discussed.
Findings • Different pedagogic identities emerged • Democratising of information has demeaned expertise and scholarship • IL is not “privileged” knowledge • The “rules of engagement” online differ to rule in “real world spaces” (Rob Kitchin) • Dispute the “digital native” and “digital immigrant” concept • Students are now struggling to read and write • Knowledge and the creation of knowledge is more vunerable
What’s next? • Interested in: • Viva • Disseminating findings • Inviting discussion on findings • Dialogue between LIS and Education Colleagues • Sharing an Irish experience and context • Finding people to work with • Share synergies • Continuing to be a researching professional
