  3. THE UNIVERSITY'S YEAR OF FOUNDATION IS GENERALLY GIVEN AS 1222, EVEN IF THE ACTUAL FOUNDATION CAN BE DATED EVEN EARLY, TO A PERIOD WHEN A NUMBER OF PROFESSORS AND STUDENTS HAD LEFT THE UNIVERSITY OF BOLOGNA; PADUA UNIVERSITY WAS NOT FOUNDED AS THE RESULT OF A CHARTER GRANTED BY POPE OF EMPEROR, BUT AS A “RESPONSE TO THE SPECIFIC SOCIAL AND CULTURAL CONDITIONS THAT CREATED A NEED FOR IT”; ITS MOTTO IS UNIVERSA UNIVERSIS PATAVINA LIBERTAS

  4. BY 1399 THERE WERE TWO UNIVERSITIES: THE UNIVERSITAS IURISTARUM, FOR THE STUDY OF CIVIL LAW, CANON LAW AND THEOLOGY; AND THE UNIVERSITAS ARTISTARUM, FOR THE STUDY OF MEDICINE, PHILOSOPHY, GRAMMAR, DIALECTICS, RHETORIC AND ASTRONOMY. THE TWO WOULD NOT BE FULLY RE-UNITED UNTIL 1813.

  5. SINCE THE 15TH CENTURY THE UNIVERSITY OF PADUA HAS BENEFITED FROM THE PROTECTION OF THE VENETIAN REPUBLIC; IT BECAME THE ONLY GYMNASIUM OMNIUM DISCIPLINARUM WITHIN ITS TERRITORIES DURING THIS PERIOD PADUA MADE ITS CONTRIBUTION TO THE SCIENTIFIC REVOLUTION, WITH DEVELOPMENTS IN PHILOSOPHY, IN MEDICINE AND ANATOMY AND DISCOVERIES IN ASTRONOMY, PHYSICS AND MATHEMATICS GALILEO GALILEI TAUGHT AT THE UNIVERSITY FROM 1592 TO 1610

  6. During the15th-16th century some important figures studied in Padua: Nicholas Copernicus, Francesco della Rovere (the future pope Sixtus IV), Giovanni Pico della Mirandola, William Harvey Gian Battista Da Monte was the first man in Europe to teach medicine and diagnosis in the presence of patients Andrea Vesalius, Gabriele Falloppio and G. Fabrici Acquapendente played an important role in anatomical discoveries

  7. 1545: foundation of the first university Botanical Garden

  8. 1594/5: construction of the first permanent anatomy theatre

  9. From the beginning, Padua's reputation had attracted students from all over the continent People were attracted not only by the fame of the university's teachers but also by the spirit of tolerance guaranteed by the Venetian Republic

  10. One particularly moment was in 1678, when Elena Lucrezia Piscopia gained her degree in Philosophy, becoming the first woman graduate in the world

  11. 1761: creation of an important Astronomical Observatory 1762: institutions of chairs in subjects as Chemistry and Agricultural Science 1797: the Venetian Republic collapsed 1866: the Veneto's unification with the State of Italy

  12. The political role of the university was apparent in the 19th century, when its professors and students took part in the local uprising of February 1848 against the Austrian occupation Padua University would live up to its motto by taking a leading role in the struggle against the Nazi occupation of 1943-45 In recognition of the sacrifices made by so many young people who lost their life in that struggle, the university would later receive the Gold Medal for Valour, the only university in Italy to gain such an award

  13. Recent changes in state legislation have also opened the way to greater autonomy for Italian universities, and in 1995 Padua adopted a new Statute that gave it greater independence As the publications of innumerable conferences and congresses show, the modern-day Padua University plays an important role in scholarly and scientific research at both a European and world level True to its origins, this is the direction in which the Institution intends to move in the future, establishing closer and closer links of co-operation and exchange with all the world's major research universities

  14. Palazzo del Bo plays an important role in students’ education. Many conferences are done there.

  15. Every day out of Palazzo del Bo there are students playing because of friends’ deegree…and you can see really EVERYTHING!!!!!!!!!!!!
