The Issues • Despite 5000 co-operative businesses in the UK this is only 2% of the economy • Co-ops are still concentrated in agriculture, retail and finance • Most co-ops are small and there are very few medium to large co-ops • Most CDBs are geared to support small, marginal, new start co-ops • Co-op friendly finance and co-op education is poor • Co-operative awareness among the public is poor

The Actions • Action 1: Set S.M.A.R.T.3 goals for: • 1 Co-operative promotion: flying the co-operative flag • 2 Co-operative growth: growing the co-operative economy (building more, bigger & better co-operative businesses) • Action 2: Make real and equitable investment in co-operative principles 5, 6 & 7 – education, co-operation among co-operatives and concern for community • Action 3: Support Co-operatives UK as the UK guardian and lead promoter of the co-operative statement of identity. • Action 4: Support the development of high quality co-operative education. • Action 5: Co-operative businesses take responsibility for leading the growth of the co-operative economy in the UK • Action 6: Develop co-operative finance solutions to deliver co-operative growth
