Four bases, increasing focus on science and discovery 1947, Signy base established 1949-52, Norweigan-Swedish-British Antarctic Expedition 1951-57, South Georgia Survey 1955-57, FIDS Aerial Survey Expedition 1956, Halley Base established 1957-58, International Geophysical Year (IGY)
