  2. Saul received the power and authority given to him by God • Chose to fight submitting to the ultimate authority • David received the power give to him by God • Chose to submit to the ultimate authority

  3. Who is Absalom? • The 3rd of the 1st 5 sons of David while living in Hebron • 1-Amnon from Jezreel • 2-Chileab from Abigail • 3-Absalom from Maacah • 4-Adonijah from Haggith • 5-Shephatian-Abital • 6-Ithrean from Eglah

  4. So what happened to him? • Sister Tamar • Raped • Tells her to keep it quiet • David gets angry and chooses to do nothing • Hatred boils within him • Plots death of Amnon • Amon killed • Absalom flees to Geshur

  5. 2 Sam 13: 39 • And the heart of the king went out, yearning for Absalom; for he was now consoled over the death of Amon

  6. Woman of Tekoa • Joab sees David down in the dumps • Gets woman to pretend to be mourning mother • Woman persuades David to bring Absalom home.

  7. Absalom come home BUT • David does not allow him to be received into his presence for 2 years • Narrative pauses for foreshadowing • Absalom is handsome-with attention to his hair • Reminds us of Saul and his tragic fate • AND reminder to Samuel not to look at outer appearance

  8. Absalom gets tired of waiting • Get servants to set Joab’s field on fire • Joab gets king to summon Absalom

  9. Absalom revolts • Steals hearts of people by wooing them at the kings gate for 4 years • Conspires to be King • “Absalom has become King at Hebron” • David flees Jerusalem

  10. Absalom’s End • Battle at Ephraim • Hair caught in a tree • Joab kills him • David mourns • Joab confronts David

  11. #1- God in the person of Jesus has all authority and power. • #2- Humans do not. • #3- God chooses to be in relationship with humans, empowering them with His Spirit to bring about His will.
