  4. Thinking about Fellowships • Identify the Appropriate Organization(s) • Read Guidelines Carefully • Does it align with your research? • Are you at the Right Stage to Apply?

  5. Preparing a Pre-Proposal • START EARLY! • At least 2 months prior to deadline date • Make a rough outline of the proposal • Talk your proposal through with advisor and others • Compose a draft

  6. General Elements of the Proposal • What’s your central research question or thesis? • Literature Review • How are you situating your study? • Discipline-based? • Methodology • Theoretical Framework • Significance of Research • What advancement are you making in the field?

  7. Writing the Proposal • Avoid jargon • Write in an accessible language • Read by reviewers from different disciplinary backgrounds • Be focused, don’t overreach • Provide clear organization • KNOW your topic

  8. Sharing the Draft • Have at least one faculty read your proposal • Have the Graduate College read your proposal • Have peers read your proposal • Have someone outside your area read the proposal

  9. Letters of Recommendation • Seek letter writers who can speak to your research – specialists in that area • Share drafts with potential letter writers and ask for feedback • ASK EARLY!!

  10. Enhancing Skills • Proposal writing as an additional skill that creates future opportunities • Keep working to hone your skills
