  1. Virtual Fitness Course

  2. INFO • Teacher: Mike Franklin • Email:Michael.franklin@fcps.org • Phone:240-236-8182 • Course site: www.apexvs.com

  3. How does this class work? Welcome to online fitness. In a 9 week fitness class in Frederick County, there are two parts to the course: academic and physical. You will get both in this course as well.

  4. ATTENDANCE:Virtual students are expected to spend the amount of time that a student in a normal fcps fitness class would. That’s 90 minutes a day. You are expected to log onto the Apex site 3-5 times a week ontop of performing your fitness logs(workouts). I will monitor when and how often you are on the site.

  5. What Do I Do First? • You will go to the course site: www.apexvs.com • Use your login and password. • Then click on the online fitness course and it will launch the class.

  6. How will I work out on a computer? One of your first written assignments will be to choose a coach. It can be a parent, teacher or certified trainer. The purpose of the coach is simply to initial your workouts(fitness logs) and take responsibility for verifying that the student is doing the work they say. The workouts are provided for the first 2 weeks. After that, you can customize your workout. Once approved, you can enjoy your own workouts.

  7. Fitness Logs Fitness logs are where you get the “physical” portion of this class. You will be required to work out 5 days a week and record your results. There will be strength, cardiovascular and flexibility data recorded in order to track your progress. You must email me 1 log per week. Once you get going, you’ll feel great!

  8. Graded Assignments: All work in the chapter must be handed in order to take the tests. There are 6 chapters in this course with Chapter 6 being a final exam. Every chapter has quizzes, homework assignments, computer scored tests(CST’s) and teacher scored tests.(TST’s)

  9. Quizzes These are multiple choice and scored by the computer as soon as you answer the last question. You must score a 70% or better on all quizzes and CST’s(computer scored tests) in order to advance. The cmputer will prompt you to retake the quiz/CST. If you fail 3 times, the course will lock you out, stop you from advancing and you must notify me to reset once you have reread.

  10. IMPORTANT!!!!! • The Chapter 3 and chapter 6 TST tests MUST BE TAKEN WITH A MEDIA SPECIALIST in your home school. No exceptions. Students are required to make arrangements with the media specialist in your school and then email me the date and time which you will be taking the exam. I require a 3 school day notice.

  11. This is the example of the Red bullets for assignments and quizzes. All of the daily assignments need to be handed in before the large TST tests are released. I will also stop progress if assignments are missing and you have not handed in the daily assignments.

  12. Progress Reports: I will send progress reports out every 2 weeks minimum. These go to student, parent home school counselor and fcvs administrators. Please make sure that parent and student email addresses are correct tonight. You can always check your grade on the apex site.

  13. How do I send completed assignments? • All completed assignments, tests and fitness logs should be emailed to me at this address: michael.franklin@fcps.org • The easiest way is to open your email and address it to me. Then go to your assignment. Just cut, paste, answer and then email.

  14. Emailing Assignments • Make an email address that is professional, no vulgar addresses! • In the subject line of each email you must include the assignment number. (Example = 4.2.4)

  15. Timelines • Although this is a self-paced course, you must stick to this timeline. This is a MINIMUM of where you should be • You may/and are encouraged to work ahead of this pace. • If assignments fall a week behind you will lose 10 points per week.

  16. Technical Support: Let me know of any issues. There is also a technical support number on the apex site. (800)453-1454

  17. Good Luck! • I look forward to working with you. If you have any questions, please contact me, I’m here to help.
