  3. What is an Optimist? • It is a flat-bottomed, hard-chine, pram-bow dinghy with a una-spritsail or a tub that produces the best sailors • Dimensions 2.31m (7'6.1/2") long, 1.13m (3'8") wide. Weight 35kg (77lbs). • It is safe and straight forward enough for an 8-year old • Yet exciting and technical enough for a 18-year old • They are available in wood or wood/epoxy. www.learnsailing.org

Heading up, Bearing Away, Windward and Leeward If the boat went into the wind it is called Heading Up Wind If the boat went away from the wind it is called Falling Off or Bearing Away This boat is Windward to the blue boat or Up Wind This boat is Leeward to the blue boat or Down Wind www.learnsailing.org

  19. Purpose of this Presentation • To help educate new sailors on the art of sailing. • To raise money for Annie • Annie has taken over 1000 new sailors out on the water. The wear and tear on the boat becomes expensive. This is our attempt to raise money to cover that budget so we can continue to offer free sailing to those who are new. • To raise money for educational programs for new sailors, juniors and sailors who are disabled. www.learnsailing.org
