  20. Job & InternshipSearch Strategies

  21. Play the Numbers More Applications = More Contacts = More Results • Plan to apply with a wide range of companies, agencies and organizations where your skills and knowledge are in demand • Consider every internship application, interview and job offer part of your market research, and a chance to build your skills • If you meet the majority of qualifications, apply!

  22. Work the Map Apply in All Relevant Markets • Similar internships may be offered in a wide range of U.S. cities, and even internationally • Companies often host the same internship program in different locations • Flexibility on location shows a commitment that stands out among the competition • For many assignments, you may be the only UC applicant

  23. Become the “Internship Magnet” Search Your Skills and Talents, not Just the Industry • Many prospective interns limit their search to one or two target industries, or a few big-name companies • Many employers seeking their skills are often ignored • Search your major, your language, software you use, and other unique aspects of your background • This approach broadens the job search to companies looking for YOU

  24. Make the Contacts Career Fairs and Campus Info Sessions • Personal contact is often key to informing employers about your unique qualifications • Career fairs, employer information sessions, and student group events are all ideal ways to make contact • Research employer opportunities for international students in advance, and refer to specific job titles

  25. Professional Panelists • Peter Zuercher, VISA • Darin Kettwig, VISA • Arlin Villa-Howells, DaVita • Courtney Iversen, Target • Matthew Emmer, Deutsche Bank • Bradley Williams, US Bank
