Definition • Service-Learning – FYE students participate inservice-learning projects which integrate community service with academic instruction that focuses on critical thinking, reflective thinking and civic responsibility.  Service-learning programs involve students in organized community service that addresses local needs, while developing their academic skills, sense of civic responsibility, and commitment to the community. Community service projects have included Habitat for Humanity, American Red Cross, Second Harvest Food Bank, the animal shelter, Relay for Life and many more.  Service opportunities are organized based on students’ interests.

  3. Benefits of service-learning include: • Provides quality education; • Increases the relevancy of education to students "living in a real world; • Teaches positive values, leadership, citizenship and personal responsibility; • Empowers students as learners, teachers, achievers and leaders; • Invites students to become members of theirnew community; • Teaches job skills and prepares students for careers after college; • Contributes to a university's outreach effortsto the local community, the state and beyond; • Increases campus-community collaboration and partnerships and • Increases retention

  11. What I got out of Service Learning • I really enjoyed doing community service for the city of Valdosta. It gave me an overwhelming sensation to know that I gave back to the community. I plan on continuing my community service outside of this class.
