Outline/Context: • “HONOR” Respect your elders and their ministry – 17-18 • Refuse to criticize your elders without witnesses – 19 • Rebuke those who continue to sin – 20 • Respond to them without prejudice or partiality- 21 • Resist choosing them or supporting them without prayerful Consideration– 22

  3. “Elder” [Function & Directives] • “17 Let the elders who rule well be counted worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in the word and doctrine.” • 1 Timothy 5:17

  4. “Elder” [Function & Directives] • “21 I charge you before God and the Lord Jesus Christ and the elect angels that you observethese things without prejudice, doing nothing with partiality. 22 Do not lay hands on anyone hastily, nor share in other people’s sins; keep yourself pure.” 1 Timothy 5:17 (NKJV)

  5. N.T. Context: • The Term “Elders” [presbuteroi] • In the early years of Christianity, spiritual leaders in local churches were consistently identified as “elders”

  6. N.T. Context: • The Term “Overseers” [episkopoi] • As Paul and his fellow missionaries partners expanded their church-planting ministry into areas the heavily populated with Gentiles, spiritual leaders were eventually identified as ”overseers” or “bishops”

  7. N.T. Context: • A primary Leader [Senior Pastor] • The N.T. definitely teaches and illustrates that when there is a plurality [more than one] of leadership, someone needs to function as the primary leader of the team.

  8. Observation: • The biblical story on local church leadership does not describe specific “forms” [patterns, methodologies, means, techniques, how it’s done] ---only “functions” and “directives.”

  9. Function:(n) position, (v) to be in action. Ex: act, perform, serve. • Directive:something that serves to direct, guide, and usually impel toward an action or goal; Ex: command, edict, order.

  10. Form: shape, structure, orderly method of arrangement (as in the presentation of ideas): manner of coordinating elements [putting the pieces together]

  11. How then should Spiritual leaders carry out the biblical functions inherent in the previous in the principles laid out by Paul in his writings?

  12. Forms and Functions • Various cultural forms are flexible but not normative [Standards] biblical functions are not. The form should be developed and tailored to each local cultural setting. • -Dr. Gene A. Getz

  13. FORMS • How old should these spiritual leaders [elders] be? • What specific methods should be used to select and appoint qualified spiritual leaders?

  14. Q: 1 How old should these spiritual leaders [elders] be? • Answer: Age-The N.T. doesn’t directly address the age issue, even in the list of qualifications. The same is true of deacons [ministers in our context].

  15. The term, “elder” (presbuteros) is sometimes translated “older” (1 Timothy 5:1; Titus 2:2), some may conclude that the very title “elder” implies that only “an older man” should be appointed to this position.

  16. Our Context: • The selection of “elders” [Ordained Ministers, Initiates], [Church leaders] it is generally agreed and wise to appoint spiritual leaders who have learned from experience, making them wise and discerning (Mature). Also that they proven themselves though a time of observation.
