Who We Are and What We Do • The Red Cross provides blood for patients in need, • collecting more than 40 percent of the nation’s • supply. • Single largest blood supplier in the United States • Trusted provider for patients in more than 3,000 hospitals • Maintains a national blood inventory management system • Participates in Rare Donor Registry – Does anyone know the most rare blood type? • - Does anyone know the type anyone can receive? AB- O-

  3. Blood. What is it? • Blood Types • There are eight common blood types that include: A-, A+, B-, B+, O-, O+, AB- and AB+. • The universal blood type is O-. In an emergency situation, everyone can receive a transfusion of O- blood. • The most rare blood type is AB-. • Types O and B are the first to run out during a blood shortage. The African American, Asian American and Latin American populations carry a high percentage of types O and B blood. • 70% of African Americans have type O or B blood.

Current Need • Impact of Hurricane Sandy and Winter Storm Athena (with Winter Storm Brutus already starting, too!) • The Red Cross must hold about 600 blood drives each day across the US to meet this need. When disaster disrupts the schedule, we immediately make plans to replenish the supply.  • As a result of Sandy, the Red Cross had to cancel 380 blood drives in 13 states resulting in a shortfall of 12,800 units of blood and platelets. • As Athena pounds the East Coast, the Red Cross is preparing to respond to this new storm at the same time as the massive relief effort for Sandy is underway. • Winter Storm Athena has the potential to cause cancellation of additional blood drives as it moves up the coast. 

  5. What an Honor! • The American Red Cross has implemented a new honor to recognize donors & volunteers. • * Donate 4 times OR Volunteer at least 8 hours of your time • * Receive red cords to wear at graduation

The Impact of Blood Donors on LCHS Families • My 14 year old stepdaughter Megan received a blood transfusion following open heart surgery in July of 2011. – Mrs. Stout, LCHS Biology Teacher RM 318 • My brother cut through the main artery in his right arm when he accidentally pushed too hard on our GLASS storm door as a 4-year old. He received 20 pints of blood and still has a scar that looks like a roly-poly bug. • – Ms. Swanson, LCHS ChildCare Teacher RM 25 • When my son was 5 months old, he was hospitalized because of a heart condition. While in the hospital, he needed a blood transfusion in order to help with the oxygen saturation in his blood. Then, when he was 8 months old, he had open heart surgery. Again he needed a blood transfusion. The hospital used the blood donated by a reliable donor to ensure that everything went smoothly. Blood Donation and Eligibility • Whole Blood Donation • To be eligible to donate whole blood someone must: • Be at least 16 years old with a signed Red Cross parental/guardian consent form • ALL LCHS student donors have to have parental consent regardless of age (school rule) • Meet specific height and weight requirements • Be in good health

Blood Donation and Eligibility • Tips for a good blood donation experience: • - Eat foods rich in iron in the days leading up to the blood drive • *Frosted Mini Wheats, Beef, Spinach, Broccoli. • *Taking Flintstones Chewable Vitamins the week before helps, too! • - Drink extra water in the days leading up to the blood drive. • - Get a good night sleep the night before the blood drive. • - Eat a good breakfast the morning of the blood drive • * Student Council is providing Krispie Kreme donuts for morning donors • and pizza for lunch-time donors! • - BRING A PHOTO ID WITH YOU TO THE BLOOD DRIVE!!!!

HOW DO I SIGN UP? • #1 Get a packet from your Rocket Academy Advisor and fill it out COMPLETELY • - this includes a parent signature no matter how old you are • #2 Turn in the completed packet to the folder outside RM 318 in the Science Hall (Stout’s room) • by Monday, November 26. • #3 COME TO SCHOOL READY TO DONATE ON FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 30 • #4 It’s really THAT simple!
