Regional Campus • The campus is geographically separate and does not serve as the medical school’s primary clinical site for medical student education. • The campus has an administrative tie to the office of the dean • (not only with departmental ties). • The campus offers four of the required third-year clerkships. • Regional Medical Campuses: • Bridging Communities, • Enhancing Mission, • Expanding Medical Education • William T. UFCOM/UFHSC Jacksonville • 1946 - The Jacksonville delegation proposed to the legislature that the first medical • school in Florida be established in Jacksonville, the University of Florida College • of Medicine – Jacksonville • 1956 - The University of Florida College of Medicine opens in Gainesville • 1958 - Started elective rotations for medical students • 1969 - Jacksonville Health Education program (JHEP) becomes first medical extension • of UF College of Medicine (UFHSC-J) • 1970 - UF formed a regional campus at FSU, the Program in Medical Sciences (PIMS) • 1983 - UF primary care network established in Jacksonville • 1988 - University Hospital of Jacksonville is designated as a major affiliate and urban • campus of University of Florida • 1991 - Required third year clerkships for UF medical students in Jacksonville • 1999 - Methodist Medical Center and University Medical Center merge to create • Shands Jacksonville • 2007 - Designation of Regional Campus of UF College of Medicine and creation of • Dean of Regional Campus

Medical School Education • 1987/1988 – 600 student weeks performed in Jacksonville • 2009/2010 – 3,058 student weeks performed • 25% of 3rd year medical student class receives required clerkships in Jacksonville • GOAL: To have 36 to 48 COM students spend 3rd & 4th years entirely on Jacksonville campus

Educational • 316 medical residents and fellows • 366 full-time faculty physicians • Residency & fellowship programs in 27 specialties • 200 UF College of Pharmacy students • 85 UF College of Nursing students • 39 CME programs, symposia & conferences each year • UF Center for Simulation Education & Safety Research – • one of the nation’s largest • 36,000-volume Borland Health Sciences Library

Research • $18.48 million in external funding FY 09/10 • $11.85 million in federal funding (64% of total) • Increase of 48% in total funding; increase of 72% in federal funding over last FY • 225 funded studies FY 09/10 (178 new awards) • 16,000-sq-ft research lab space including translational research facility • University of Florida Health Science Center – Jacksonville IRB follows 550 active studies annually/226 new studies in FY09/10 • Clinical Research Unit to perform specialized inpatient studies; designated resources for extensive outpatient studies
