  1. How Can You Recognize a True Friend?? Presented By: Ettie Abraham

  2. AIM • arouse thought • deal with conflicts and themes that are always relevant when dealing with people. • The students will become aware of difficulties people were confronted with during WWII. • Are these dilemmas still relevant? • What can be done to minimize/solve them?!

  3. Level and Time The grade level is 11th -12th grades ,High School, high proficiency Duration:7-8 Lessons, each is 45 minutes for each film +poem. Required: Internet access and overhead projector

  4. Relationship between Jews and gentiles between the Wars. Enduring Understanding: People who have different perspectives or grow apart from each other, should strive to understand the other and always remain humane. Goals: Students should be familiar with various genres of literature. 1 2. Students should be familiar with literary terms. 3. Students should be familiar with the history of the Jewish people during WWII. 4. Students should be able to compare different genres of art. 5. Students should be exposed to various themes and be able to express their thoughtsand emotions.

  6. Introduction Prior to the lesson, the history teacher should give a general introduction of “The Jewish life in Germany and Austria between WWI and WWII”. The students should be exposed to different relationships people had and the influence of the changing atmosphere between the Wars.

  7. Pre- Reading Activity Students will look up information about the author Kathrine Kressmann Taylor including the incentive for the idea of the book and summarize itin a paragraph.

  8. Lesson 1 -4: Reading the Story & Analysis Reading and analyzing the story. (Literary terms included). While reading, students fill out a time- line based on the story and the information taught in the history lesson. The students should master the following literary terms: characterization, setting, genre, theme, dialogue, point of view. The student should master the HOTS: applying, inferring, compare and contrast, Distinguishing different perspectives, reflecting.

  9. Lessons 5, 6: Film and Interpretation Before watching the film, the students will be told that the film "Herbert Lewin –stories of my life" was made by "Centropa", an organization that took upon itself to tell the life stories of Jews who lived during the 20th century. Show the film" Herbert Lewin –stories of my life"

  10. Compare and Contrast the Story and Film. • What are the mutual themes? • What are the differences? • What historic information did you learn from the film? • How did this information help you appreciate the story "Address Unknown“ in a different perspective? • What conclusions have you reached from the story and the film? • What moral questions can you ask about behavior of individuals?

  11. Lesson 7: Reflection Write a letter to Martin (the gentile from Address Unknown) telling him about the behavior of Hans (the gentile from the film). This whole unit is a PBT (Performance Based Task)
