  1. Citrix and the Wireless Internet The Viability of the Solution Presented by: Jason Gradel – Sr. Systems Engineer Doug Brown – Systems Engineer

  2. Today’s Agenda • Wireless 101 and Alphabet Soup • The Citrix Vision and Value Add • The Customer Demand • Deployment Considerations • Deployment Scenario Today • Partnering for Success

  3. Wireless 101 • Mobility The application of mobile devices and wireless technology to enable communication • Wireless The use of a device and public mobile networks to access information and conduct transactions. Definition • Mobility Solutions include the delivery of: • Solutions for information sharing and networking • Solutions for wireless connectivity (network infrastructure/systems) • Solutions for mobile devices Clarification Source: Durlacher, Mobility Solution Report, Nov. 1999; Ovum, Mobile E-Commerce, March 2000; CGE&Y Analysis

  4. Wireless 101 • PAN (Personal Area Network) • High-bandwidth/short-range cable replacement • wLAN (Wireless Local Area Network) • LAN that uses wireless transmissions such as radio or infrared instead of phone lines or fiber-optics to connect data devices. • wWAN (Wireless Wide Area Network) • Broadly used definition of a network that provides the means to access information over a diverse set of wireless and wired networks.

  5. Wireless 101 • Wireless technology standards differentiated by • Bandwidth • Geography • Device Support • Switching Method • Two types of switching method • Circuit Switched • Takes over a voice channel to transmit and receive data, keeping a phone line open during the entire session • Packet switched • Compresses data and sends bursts between conversations or during gaps in conversations on the voice channels

  12. Citrix Value Add • Network utilization • ICA is THIN! • Support for wired and wireless connections (GSM, GPRS, CDMA, CDPD, etc) • Latency reduction and Speedscreen enhance already thin connectivity • Application management • Deliver existing applications “as is” • Rapid deployment/upgrades • Consistent experience

  13. Citrix Value Add • Client device • ICA turns any device into a thin client • Seamless windows enables interaction between server and client peripherals • Panning and scaling optimizes viewing area • Security • Keep data in the glass house • Encrypt with industry standard technologies

  14. What Customers are Saying • By 2003, 80% of IT managers will support wireless LANs and 45% will support wireless data users on public WAN networks. Data security and tech support are their biggest worries. Giga, 2001 • Of iForum attendees, 2/3 reported their IT groups had responsibility for wireless data and 50% support wireless telephony. Gartner, 2002. • Enterprises that fail to support their mobile workers’ needs could realize a 20% loss in productivity. Conversely, wireless technology can increase business productivity by as much as 30%. Gartner, 2002

  15. Citrix wWAN opportunity What Customers are Saying Citrix customers would be willing to pay cellular rates to access corporate applications over a public carrier’s Wireless WAN.

  21. Deployment Considerations • Identify the target user groups/ communities for mobility services • Define their primary access and application needs • Select the mobile content and applications that are likely to be most successful for target communities? • Define how elements of the mobile experience can be combined to deliver a compelling mobile experience, and how should this experience evolve over time? Define the Mobile UserExperience

  22. Deployment Considerations • Evolve/establish your carrier relationship • Look to your key existing platform partner/provider for mobile solutions • Identify your mobile solution vendors • Who else in the organization should participate in these initiatives Develop Mobile PartneringStrategy

  23. Deployment Considerations • Determine the technology architecture required to support the desired mobile user experience • Potentially select candidates for mobility solutions piloting or early point solution development • What is the cost / benefit of various technology alternatives (e.g., build, outsource)? Define Technology Roadmap
