  5. Communication Folders This year each 3rd grader will have a planner! Please be sure to check each night for this planner. Important notes, reminders, homework and graded papers as well as HOW I ACT behavior notes will all be in this planner.

  6. Northbrook is Title I • How did we become a Title I Campus? • Based on the number of Students who qualify for Free or Reduced Lunch in the School District. • At Northbrook in the 2011-2012 School year, we had 65.6% of our students qualify. • What does this mean for our campus? • Title I is a federal program designed to help students who need additional support in Reading or Math—not only students who qualify for Free or Reduced Lunch. • We receive federal funds because of our Title I status. • At Northbrook, Title I money is used to fund 2 teachers: Our Math Specialist and our Reading Specialist

  7. Attendance • 90% Rule • Texas Compulsory Attendance law requires that students must be in attendance 90% of the school year in order to receive credit for that year. An absence can be all day or partial day. Tardies can be considered for this state law and also for truancy. • Attendance and being on time is IMPORTANT! • Students arriving late will need an adult to sign them into school in the office. • Your child should be at school unless they are sick. • If you have a scheduled appointment for something other than illness, it is important that your child attend school for the other part of the school day. • Truancy will be filed on your student if they miss school excessively and the absences are not excused.

  8. Math Our objectives will include: • Measurement-- 3rd graders are expected to know how to measure quarter inches. Meaning ¼ inch, ½ inch and ¾ inch! • Time– 3rd graders are expected to know quarter past and quarter till, as well as how to read a clock • Temperature • Rounding, Place Value, Fractions, Decimals, and Estimation • Patterns and Relationships, Solving Multi-Step Word problems • Most importantly please HELP YOUR CHILD LEARN THEIR BASIC ADDITION AND SUBTRACTION FACTS!

  11. Reading & Language ARts • In 3rd Grade we move from learning how to read to understanding what we read. • Students learn about different genres and purposes used by authors. • Students begin learning academic vocabulary. • Students continue to learn write in complete thoughts on one topic. • Students continue to practice spelling patterns.

  12. Home Work All homework assignments will be noted in the planner by your child, as well as in the weekly newsletter!

  13. HomeWork • Each grade level will assign reading, math, and spelling homework. • Homework will be given out every Monday. Math & reading will be collected every Thursday.  Spelling will be collected every Friday. •  If a student does not do their HW then they are expected to work on it during their recess time on Friday. (No tallies will be pulled) So their conduct grade will not be effected. •  Homework should take 30 minutes or less each night, plus 20 minutes for reading. • Students have the opportunity to come to the library Wed-Fri mornings from 7:10-7:30 to have a place to do their HW and or get help with their HW.  (no food or drink allowed)

  16. Drop off procedures • Students must be dropped off at the main entrance to the building. All other doors are locked for teacher use only. • If you want to come inside the building between 7:10- 7:40 AM, you MUST sign in at the office and receive a Visitor’s Badge. • In order to receive a Visitor’s Badge, you MUST leave your Driver’s License in the office. You may pick it up when you return your Visitor’s Badge.

  17. PicK-up Information • Car riders will be picked up on the East side of Northbrook. We release students at 2:40. After 2:55, students will be in the office. • Walkers will be escorted outside and supervised until they cross the street. • YMCA will be escorted to the cafeteria. Please notify us with a note if there are ANY changes to their normal transportation. Also, be sure your child knows how they are getting home on the first day and beyond.

  18. Does your child know how to contact YOU if there is an emergency? Do your children know how to find each other on campus? What grade/class their sibling is in? This information is very helpful to the teachers and administrators on campus to help keep your children safe!
