  5. Guidelines for Action • Assess the whole situation • Stay calm • Use distress signal to attract boat/shore cover • Assess the condition of casualty • Help available - wait, reassuring casualty • No help available • start tow depending on state of casualty

  6. Methods of Towing • Various Scenarios • Conscious and co-operative casualty • Unconscious casualty • Non-breathing casualty

  7. Conscious and co-operative casualty • Extended arm tow - hands cupped under casualty's chin, fin either side or deep • Underarm tow - use one or both hands, fin as in extended arm tow

  8. Unconscious casualty • Immediate action • Make contact • Drop weight belt • Inflate buoyancy aid if applicable • Assess condition of casualty • If breathing tow as before • If not breathing perform in water EAR

  9. In water EAR • Clear airway by performing neck extension

  10. In water EAR • Two options to choose: • Mouth to Mouth EAR • Mouth to Nose EAR

  11. Rescue Management • Designated person co-ordinates rescue once casualty and rescuer on shore • Factors to consider: • Danger/Responsiveness - ABC • Activate Emergency Plan • Organise transportation • Control Peripheral Activities • Maintain constant vigilance
