Saddam Hussein and 9.11.2001 • Hussein was the fifth President of Iraq • July 16, 1979 – April 9, 2003 • Responsible for the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center on the morning of September 11, 2001. • Saddam Hussein was found and captured by American forces on December 13, 2003 • Operation Red Dawn • Taken to the American base near Baghdad • Executed December 30, 2006

  6. Occasion: • The Day after the capture of Saddam Hussein. • December 14, 2003 • Hussein was found near a townhouse in the city of Tikritand captured alive. • Bush delivered this speech from the oval office.

  7. Audience: • American citizens • The people of America had been waiting for the capture of Hussein ever since 9/11. When Bush delivered this speech, the people of America could be at ease, know that one of the most feared people in the world was contained. • Citizens of Iraq • Many Iraqis had been awaiting this moment for their whole lives. They will now be able to live more freely, without having to fear their dictator.

  8. Purpose: • Outline a mission for a new, free Iraq • “I have a message for the Iraqi people: You will not have to fear the rule of Saddam Hussein ever again. All Iraqis who take the side of freedom have the winning side. The goals of our coalition are the same as your goals – sovereignty for your country, dignity for your great culture, and for every Iraqi citizen, the opportunity for a better life.”

Purpose: • Credit the men and women of the US Military • “The success of yesterday’s mission is a tribute to our men and women now serving in Iraq.” • “Today on behalf of the nation, I thank the members of our Armed Forces and I congratulate ‘em.” • “Our servicemen and women…have faced many dangers…intheir effort to bring hope and freedom to the Iraqi people.”

  10. Subject: • The subject of Bush’s speech is the capture of Saddam Hussein, and how America plans to help develop a new, free Iraq. Tone: • Grateful • Triumphant • Determined • Celebratory

  11. Quotes • “Yesterday, December the 13th, at around 8:30 p.m. Baghdad time, United States military forces captured Saddam Hussein alive. He was found near a farmhouse outside the city of Tikrit, in a swift raid conducted without casualties. And now the former dictator of Iraq will face the justice he denied to millions.” • Bush makes sure to point out the fact that there were no casualties in the raid, and nobody was harmed. It would be very difficult to not kill Hussein after he was responsible for the deaths of thousands of Americans in 2001.

Quotes: (cont.) • “The capture of this man was crucial to the rise of a free Iraq.” • Bush’s main goal in this speech is to work towards the betterment of Iraq. • “I also have a message for all Americans: The capture of Saddam Hussein does not mean the end of violence in Iraq.” • Bush understands that just because the leader of Iraq has been captured, doesn’t mean that the war is over.

  13. Bush’s Final Statement: • “May God bless the people of Iraq, and may God bless America. Thank you.” • Puts Iraq first.
