  2. The Diwali festival of lights actually lasts for five days and the main event takes place on the third day in most parts of India. It is associated with the return of Lord Rama to his Ayodhya kingdom after exile and the rescue of his wife from the Dussehra monster. However, in South India the festival is celebrated as Narakasuran defeat. It is a one-day festival called Diwali, which usually falls one day before the main Diwali date, but sometimes on the same day (when the lunar days overlap). The festival is not celebrated in Kerala. Lakshmi Devi, the Goddess of Fortune and Prosperity, is the primary deity worshiped on the occasion of Diwali. Every day is of special importance.

  3. The first day (November 12, 2020) is called Dhanteras or Dhantrayodashi. "Dhan" means wealth and "terrace" refers to the thirteenth day of the two-week moon in the Hindu calendar. Dhanvantari, the incarnation of the Hindu physician and Vishnu, is said to have brought the elixir of Ayurveda and immortality to mankind on this day. There are many temples dedicated to Dhanvantari and Ayurveda in Kerala and Tamil Nadu. According to mythology, Lakshmi Devi was born on this day from the hurricane of the sea and was welcomed with a special puja (ritual). Gold and other metals (including kitchen utensils) are traditionally purchased. People gather to play cards and gamble because they think it is auspicious and bring wealth throughout the year.

  4. The second day (November 13, 2020) is known as NarakaChaturdasi or ChotiDiwali (Small Diwali). "Naraka" means hell and "Chaturdashi" means the 14th day of the lunar week in the Hindu calendar. It is believed that Goddess Kali and Lord Krishna destroyed a demon named Narakasuran on this day. Demon idols are lit in Goa during the Onam celebrations. In 2020, NarakaChaturdasi will overlap with the new moon and fall on the same day, November 14th.

  5. The fourth day (November 15, 2020) has different meanings across India. In northern India, GovardhanPuja is celebrated on the day when Krishna defeated Indra, the god of thunder and rain. In Gujarat, it is celebrated at the beginning of the new year. In Maharashtra, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, the victory of King Vishnu over King Bali is celebrated as Bali Pratipada or Bali Patami.

  6. The fifth day (November 16, 2020) is called BhaiDuj. It is dedicated to celebrating sisters, and RakshaBandhan is similarly dedicated to brothers. The brothers share food with each other and respect the relationship between them.
