  5. Critical Vocabulary- Top of Pg. 82 • Please write down vocabulary and draw a picture to remind you of what the word means. • Synapse = Place where the 2 neurons meet. It includes the receptors of the 2 neurons along with the synaptic cleft. • Synaptic Cleft = The space in between the axon terminal and the dendrite of two neurons. • Synaptic vesicle = Packaged ball of neurotransmitters. Calcium Channel = Protein channels in the membrane that allow Calcium to come into the axon terminal. Pre-Synaptic Neuron = The neuron who transmits the signal to another neuron (axon terminal of the first neuron). Post-synaptic Neuron = The neuron that receives the signal (the dendrite of the next neuron). Neurotransmitter = the chemical that is released between two neurons to transmit the signal.

  6. Explain how a neural signal is communicated across a synapse.

  7. How do you communicate to your friend in Texas, without any technology?

  16. A. IBE Directions- Do under your catalyst Draw and label this whole pic! Directions • Part 1: Arrange the pictures in order the order of the pictures on your sheet. Then, arrange the written descriptions in order. Try to match the description with its picture. • Part 2. Label the following parts of the picture below: presynaptic neuron, postsynaptic neuron, neurotransmitter, postsynaptic receptor, neurotransmitter transporter, synaptic vesicle

  17. Investigate on Your Own- Pg. 84 http://learn.genetics.utah.edu/content/addiction/crossingdivide/ • Fill in the blanks on the same page you did your catalyst • Anatomy: Lesson 83- Synaptic Transmission Online Investigation-3/27-3/28

  18. Get Ready for Notes Pg. 82-83Title: Synaptic Transmission

  19. Step 1 INITIATION: The electric signal reaches the axon terminal of the presynaptic neuron.

  20. Step 2 RELEASE: The electric signal causes the synaptic vesicle to fuse with the membrane, releasing neurotransmitters into the synaptic cleft

  21. Step 3 BINDING: Neurotransmitters bind to the receptors on the postsynaptic neuron.

  22. Step 4 EFFECT: Binding of neurotransmitters to the postsynaptic neuron causes a change in the postsynaptic neuron. For example, it may cause the signal to continue to the next neuron or to stop.

  23. Step 5 REMOVAL: The neurotransmitters are either recycled, removed, or deactivated from the synaptic cleft.

  24. Part 3- Label your neuron Presynaptic neuron (axon terminal) Postsynaptic neuron (dendrite) synaptic vesicle neurotransmitter Postsynaptic receptor
