  1. The Ancient World This lesson will help you see the BIG PICTURE! Think about areas of strength and areas requiring further development. Lesson Aim: To gain an overview of medical developments in the Ancient Period.

The Ancient World – Overview • Remove the contents of your plastic wallet. • Place the 4 PERIODS of history in CHRONOLOGICAL order on your desk. • Next take the PICTURES and place next under the correct period • Next match the KEY WORDS to the pictures, placing them under the correct period. • YOU HAVE THE DURATION OF THE MUSIC TO COMPLETE THIS ACTIVITY

EXTENSION ACTIVITY • Which period saw the first Doctors? • Which theories of disease are based on superstitious ideas? • Which theories of disease are based on natural explanations? • Which period saw a movement towards a more scientific form of thinking? • Which period represents a turning point in ideas?

  4. Record your knowledge of Medicine during the Ancient World • Key Individuals • Theories of Disease • Knowledge of Anatomy & Physiology • Main Treatments • Hygiene & PublicHealth 15 - 20 minutes • EXTENSION- complete the final column

  5. Prehistoric Medicine • Medicine Men / Aborigines • If illness could not be explained - Evil Spirits • Little knowledge of human body • PRACTICAL = Herbs (orchid bulbs for stomach) / clay packs / SUPERSTITIOUS = Trephinning • Nomadic lifestyle kept them fit. No organised PH.

  6. Egyptian Medicine • Doctors, Imphotep, Priests • Theory of Blockages, Spirits (scarab beetles), Natural understanding • Increased knowledge of human body through embalming • Herbs, eg. Ochre, Cocaine to numb pain / Spells & Potions / Simple Surgery (remove tumours) • Simple sewers. Priests washed hands twice daily setting an example.

  7. Greek Medicine • Hippocrates, Asklepios • 4 Humours, (Yin & Yang) Astrology, Asklepois • Anatomical knowledge from Egypt, India & China • Surgical knowledge from Mesopotamia, Egypt, India Theory of 4 Humours, Asklepois, acupuncture • Simple sewers and water pipes – continuing Egyptian ideas..

  8. Roman Medicine • Galen, Asklepios • 4 Humours, The Gods • Anatomical knowledge from Galen’s dissections (some errors) • Mistrust of Greek Doctors led to PREVENTION rather than cure. Theory of 4 Humours • Government funded, co-ordinated and inspected Public Heath works eg. Sewers, toilets, aqueducts, baths, fountains

  9. Identifying Themes in the History of Medicine • Now take 6 colouring pencils and colour code the information in your grid. EG. Role of Science = • Theory of the 4 Humours • EG. Trade = • Egyptians – treatments (herbs) • YOU HAVE 5 MINUTES

  15. PLENARY – answering exam questions Before you sit the exam tomorrow, reflect on your learning to date. For each of the periods of history that we have studied, identify your level of understanding. Go through the key areas in the booklet. When revising make sure you focus on these areas.

FINAL THOUGHT – identifying your LEARNING STYLE • During this course you have experiences a variety of learning styles: • Model maps (on Galen/ Egyptian treatments in the booklet) • Diagrams (on Roman Public Health) • Table/Grid format (today’s activity / Summary of Greek medical ideas in booklet) • Linear notes (notes which go down the page under headings – as you would normally read them.) Your booklet paragraphs

  17. Revision – final tip! • Be punctual – you will need all lesson to complete the questions. • Learn spellings of key Worlds – the vocab will not appear on the wall tomorrow! • Good luck in the exam tomorrow.
