  4. Why now? • SAISD Budget Crisis/ Shortfall • Several Elementary and Middle schools operating well below capacity • Cooper MS has only 300 enrolled (Built for 750) • School Closures will save the district $ 6 million • Increase Student Performance

  7. Ethic of Caring (Shapiro & Stefkovich, 2005) Emphasizes listening to others when making important decisions • “He put on the brakes after community members and a district-appointed advisory committee balked at the speed with which he was moving. He slowed down and worked more closely with the committee’ (DeLaRosa, 2008). Community meetings were held in which Duron explained the benefits students and parents would receive with the streamlined district

  8. Duron was forced to question the nature of the funding system for public schools. The difficult decision was placed in his hands. Closing the schools could be seen as a way to make a point about the drastic steps that come in the setting of the current system. Ethic of Critique(Shapiro & Stefkovich, 2005)

  9. Ethic of Profession (Shapiro & Stefkovich, 2005) Leader’s professional ethics v. Ethics of the Community • Dr. Duron focuses on the long term impact • The community’s focus is geared towards maintaining tradition "People are tied to their schools. Schools are very important focal points to their neighborhoods," spokeswoman Carmen Vazquez-Gonzalez said. "But the district has got to take another step (Driscoll, 2008).
