  5. What is CALL? • How do you define CALL?

  6. Theoretically… • Levy M. (1997) “the search for and study of applications of the computer in language teaching and learning” • Davies, G. (2005) (narrowly) “an approach to language teaching and learning in which the computer is used as an aid to the presentation, reinforcement and assessment of material to be learned, usually including a substantial interactive element.”

  7. The problem is… • Healey (GloCALL 2007): • There is no ‘fixed’ theory in CALL • There are only common practices in certain contexts • Why? • Computer technology is changing so fast ! • But… • Research possibilities are so vast! • Different softwares, websites, learners, cultures, you name it! • Revolution and evolution in teaching  creative!

Experiencing ICT in Indonesia • Government Efforts  Development and Implementation of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in Indonesia (2001-2005) (Yuhetty,2002) • Development of collaboration between ICT industry and ICT educational institutions through training and R & D , and network building for skills and capacity development • Develop and implement Curricula of ICT • Use ICTs as an essential part of the curricula and learning tools in schools/universities and training centers • Facilitate the use of internet for more efficient teaching and learning

HarinaYuhetty (2004) & Herawati (2006) • Patterns of Internet use for learning • The school designated a teacher to search and find information from the internet as needed by the subject teachers • Teachers with computer (internet) literacy should search and find by themselves any information that is necessary through internet kiosks or internet in school. • Teachers identify any necessary sites needed by students on each topics of certain subject, and then assign students to study the information at home (through internet). • Students based on their initiatives search and find information through internet. • Students’ advanced use: information, functional, creation, communication purposes

Constraints of ICT in Indonesia • Constraints: • Slow adoption of ICT culture (decision makers, teachers, students) for learning purposes • No integration of ICT into school curricula • Facility and connectivity • Not enough and unequal distribution of ICT facilities • Lack of sufficient bandwidth and limited access to ICT facilities • Lack of Funding (expensive internet connections) • Lack of local on line learning materials • Lack of ICT Human resources in terms of quantity and quality • Language constraints
