  1. The Nature of Science College Bio Chapter 1

  2. What is science? • Science is the method of studying phenomena • Guided by the scientific method. • Though it is not always as cut and dry as the posters. • Big questions take a lot of time • The Grants have been doing the same research since 1937!

  3. What is the goal of science? • Science is a way of understanding those phenomena around us. • The goal of science is to find proof for a hypothesis. • It is not to disprove anything

  4. How is science done? • We (scientists) often use experimenting as a means of understanding. • Following the scientific method is often a trial and error process. • This can also lead to finding new research opportunities. • Bees and self-medicating? • Growing mushrooms and nutrient sources.

  5. What does it mean to be living? • All living organisms share a certain set of characteristics. You need to know them. • Made of cells • Reproduce by passing on the heredity material, DNA • Grow and Develop • Capture and use energy from the environment • Respond to environmental changes • Levels of organization • Evolove

  6. What about viruses? • Are they alive? What do you think? • They share characteristics of both living and non-living things. Can you list them? • Watch, respond, discuss.

  7. Biological Hierarchy • Organismal Heirarchy • Molecules -> Tissues -> Organs -> Organ Systems -> Organisms (an individual) • Ecological Hierarchy • Individual -> Population -> Community -> Ecosystems -> Biomes -> Biosphere

  8. Biological Hierarchy • These hierarchy help provide us with a framework to investigate our world. • We can look at relationships between levels to help examine, hypothesize, and conclude.
