  1. Dividing Decimals by Whole Numbers Part 1

  2. Parts of a division problem… Key Vocabulary… GOES INTO quotient divisor ) dividend DIVIDED BY

  3. Parts of a division problem… dividend = quotient divisor dividend ÷ divisor = quotient

  4. Writing the Division Problem… When you are thinking about long division… think of In-and-Out.

  5. ) 24 Setting up your long division problem… IN – n- OUT 24 ÷ 9 9 OUT IN

  6. To keep your long division steps in order, remember the basic family… • DAD • Divide the divisor into the dividend • MOM • Multiply the divisor by the factor you are about to put into your quotient • SISTER • Subtract the product from the dividend/difference • the CAT • Compare your new difference with the divisor to make sure it is smaller • If the difference is larger than the divisor, then increase the last digit in your quotient by one. • And BROTHER • Bring down the next digit in your problem

  7. Remember the parts of a division problem: quotient 9 5 45 dividend divisor

  8. Dividing a Decimal by a Whole Number • Place the decimal point in the quotient directly above the decimal point in the dividend. • Divide as you normally would following • D – Divide • M – Multiply • S – Subtract • C – Compare • B – Bring Down

  9. Example DMSCB 2 . 5 5 12.5 10 2 5 25 0

  10. 1 1 . 2 8 Example 2 9 101.52 9 1 1 Check: 9 2 5 Quotient x divisor = dividend 18 11.28 x 9 = 101.52 7 2 72 0
