War of the Pacific (1879-1883) Costal region contained nitrate rich guano (explosive), copper, and silver Chile, Peru, and Bolivia all wanted to use this nice land so they made a treaty The treaty was broken so the three went to war and Chile was able to win by supplying troops via supply ships guarded by their strong military Chile gained resourceful coastal land

Chilean Coup (1973) In an attempt to stop the spread of communism the US helped spread the seeds for the Chilean coup On September 11th, 1973 the Chilean military attacked the presidential palace and tortured/killed all supporters of Salvador Allende The Marxist president committed suicide before he could be murdered and Augusto Pinochet became Chile’s dictator

San Jose Mine Collapse (August 5th-October 13th 2010) August 5th, 2010 33 miners were trapped when the San Jose mine’s main ramp collapsed The rescue operation took over two months and was one of the most closely watched in history The mission was a success and through innovative thinking, all 33 miners were successfully rescued on October 13th, 2010

  13. Chilean Military Plane Goes Missing This disturbing news discouraged travelers and signified that the military had lost a plane. Five employees of the national television network (TVN) were aboard the flight. September 13th, 2011 A Chilean military plane crashed in strong winds and on/off rain off the coast of the Juan Fernandez Islands. The plane carried 21 people. Their luggage was found floating in the water offshore and the plane door was also spotted in the sea.

Allende’s Death Ruled a Certain Suicide July 9th, 2011 To quell speculation that the former president of Chile Salvador Allende could have been killed by the military in the Coup of 1973 his body was exhumed and examined by a team of top forensic anthropologists. They concluded with certainty that as was said before, the ex-president indeed committed suicide. The fact that Allende was able to take his own life before he was humilidated was a source of pride for his family and supporters. This news gave them both final solace and helped the country remember Chile’s 9/11.

Protesters Angry over Patagonia Dam Project “Patagonia Without Dams” June 16th, 2011 Protests were organized around the country as the Chilean government approved a $3.2 billion dollar plan to build a hydo-electric dam in one of Patagonia’s most attractive regions. The people don’t want to see a beautiful region besmirched by a mechanical product. This would also affect the revenue made off of ecotourism annually. However the pressure is on the Chilean in increase their alternative energy production.

Culture: Arena ‘ Shape Rodeo Fine, traditional clothing is worn by the hausos Rodeo was declared the national sport of Chile in 1962 Typically there is music, dancing, and an open-pit barbecue at rodeos Hausos attempt to pin a cow against the side of the arena and turn it around Being a famous hauso is very prestigious

  18. Current Social/Political Issues The pressure is on the Chilean government to create clean energy. They are attempting to dam some of Chile’s most beautiful regions causing protests from environmental activist groups Dam building Chile is home to a good amount of forests and trees. Wood is regularly cut down for lumber and fire fuel. This logging industry has clashed with eco friendly groups several times. Deforestation Chilean students are protesting against their government’s educational reforms. The new plan involves them paying much more money than before, potentially taking school out of the economical picture for many students. Educational reform
