  3. Analyze Phase Performance Assessment:

  4. Standards • S6CS4. Students will use tools and instruments for observing, measuring, and manipulating equipment and materials in scientific activities. a. Use appropriate technology to store and retrieve scientific information in topical, alphabetical, numerical, and keyword files, and create simple files S6CS6. Students will communicate scientific ideas and activities clearly. S6E5. Students will investigate the scientific view of how the earth’s surface is formed. b. Investigate the contribution of minerals to rock composition. c. Classify rocks by their process of formation.

  5. Student Profile • Primary Student Group There are 29 students in Mr. Davenport’s class. • General Characteristics They are all 6th graders ages of 12 and 13. 36% are Hispanic, one speaks no English, and the others are ELL. • Number of students 29 • Location of students The training will occur in Computer Lab #1 at BHL • Experience levels They have been in the 6th grade for roughly 3 months. • Student attitudes Students are excited to try something new. They like the fact that it is different from PowerPoint. Their main motivation is a good project grade.

  6. Design • Day one is spent on them learning the basic parts of the Prezi formatting software. • Days two and three will be for them to work on completing their Prezi on rocks and the rock cycle. • Days five and six they will be grading one another’s Prezis and the teacher will also be evaluating the student’s work.

  7. Development Phase Lesson Day One • Standards: • S6CS4. Students will use tools and instruments for observing, measuring, and manipulating • equipment and materials in scientific activities. • a. Use appropriate technology to store and retrieve scientific information in topical, • alphabetical, numerical, and keyword files, and create simple files • S6CS6. Students will communicate scientific ideas and activities clearly. • S6E5. Students will investigate the scientific view of how the earth’s surface is formed. • b. Investigate the contribution of minerals to rock composition. • c. Classify rocks by their process of formation. • Opening: Have students take out a sheet of paper and write down five interesting things about themselves.Mini-Lesson: Pass out the step by step guide on how to make a prezi to the students. Read through the steps with them so they will know what is expected of them. Walk through the process of making a Prezi on the SmartBoard using the following site, http://www.teachwithvideo.com/blog/2011/05/02/how-to-use-prezi/ .Lesson: After going through the presentation steps have them log onto their computer. Now the students will take the checklist that was given to them and create a ‘mini’ Prezi about themselves and their interests. Our class log in should be posted on the board for them to see. The username is ndavenport0325@lion.piedmont.edu and the password is amiami77. Walk through the steps with them (computer is attached to the SmartBoard) using the computer so they can see what they need to do. The other teacher will circulate to answer questions that students may have if they get lost or confused. Take your time walking through this process, as the whole day is set aside for them to learn how to use this software. Summary: Student ticket out the door: ‘I didn’t understand….’.

  8. Development Phase (cont.) Lesson Day 2 & 3 Standards: S6CS4. Opening: Have students fill out their rocks checklist that will help them to create their presentation. Mini-Lesson: Have a Q&A session with the students about what they had the most difficulty with. Also pass out to the students the rubric being used to judge/grade their Prezi and presentation. Lesson: Have the students to log onto their computers, and have them go to www.prezi.com. Make sure that each of the students has his/her Prezi step by step guide on their desk for referencing. Also make sure that the students have their checklist with them. Summary: Have the students write ‘I feel I did well with ______ and I need help with_______’.

  9. Development Phase (cont.) Lesson Day 4 & 5 Standards: S6CS4. Opening: Have students to make a list of appropriate behaviors to use while someone is presenting a presentation. Mini-Lesson: Use the Prezi that was created for the Labe Safety unit, and present it, making sure to show and illuminate what proper presentation etiquette is to the students. Also quickly review the rubric that will be used for grading/judging their Prezi and presentation. Lesson: Log into Prezi for the students. One at a time have the students to come up and present their Prezi. Make sure they have their rubric before they come up to do their presentation and obtain that from them. If they do not have their rubric it is an automatic minus 5 points off of their project. Summary: Have the students describe what the most difficult thing was when presenting their projects.

  10. Development Phase (cont.) • At the end of this development phase of creating a Prezi on rocks, the goal is that the student was able to create the Prezi without too much trouble or complications. But, ultimately the reason for doing this project is to reinforce the information that the students have acquired about rocks and their general make-up.
