  3. The Students will be presented new information about segregation using Powerpoint in kiosk mode. • Then they will be given and interactive quiz to review what they have learned. • Here are some sample slides:

  4. This slide show is an extension to the book Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry by Mildred D. Taylor. The objective of the slide show is to introduce you to segregation in the south in the 1930s. The time in which the book takes place.

  5. Your Objectives: You will learn the definition of segregation. You will learn when legal segregation Started in the united states You will learn what “jim Crow” Laws Were.

  6. Segregation is separation of groups Of people by custom or by law often Based on race or ethnic origins. People in the dominant group often Feel superior to the other group. Some People fear losing power over the Other group.

  7. In the united states legal segregation Started in the 1880s. The Laws that supported this were Called Jim Crow laws. The name jim crow Came from a singer Named thomas rice. Rice had a “jim crow” song and Dance routine that made Fun of african Americans.

  8. Roll of Thunder takes place in the early 1930s when segregation was still Widely practiced. The following quote by the author Mildred Taylor shows how Jim Crow laws affected Her childhood: “that summer and summers to come I came to realize that the Lovely baskets of food my mother always packed for trips, she Prepared because we could not eat in the Restaurants: that the Long overnight ride was because we could not sleep in the motels.” from taylor’s 1977 newberry Acceptance speech
