  2. Purifying the Soul • The loss of all pleasure once experienced in devotional life. • An act of God to bid you to grow deeper.

  3. Secret Pride • Being too spiritual • Looking for attention • Fear confession • Begging God to take away imperfections, but not for God’s sake • Must be countered with humility

  4. Attached to the Feelings • Spiritual greed • No substance • The soul must be purged of emotional affections and replaced with substance so the soul may grasp God

  5. Spiritual Luxury • The most important and has three causes • First Cause: Physical pleasure • Second Cause: Satan & demons • Third Cause: Fear of impure thoughts • The flesh must be quieted

  6. Saints in a Day • Spiritual wrath • Self-inflicted • You need patience

  7. Beyond Limits of Moderation • Spiritual gluttony • Growing weary • Efforts to obtain consolation actually lose spirituality

  8. Weary with Spiritual Exercises • Spiritual envy • Spiritual sloth

  9. God Works Passively • God sees our imperfections and urges us to grow up • Pride  humility, greed  simplicity, wrath  contentment, luxury  peace, gluttony  moderation, envy  joy, sloth  strength

  10. Mirrors See What You Cannot • Which sins are you ensnared in? • Ps. 42.9 “Why have you forgotten me?” • Be accountable in accountability • Take a break • Be patient with God this week
